Bethany's Swinging Supperclub #Mawsam
A Supperclub you say?
A supper club – also know as an underground or secret restaurant – is an intimate dining experience that one sets up in their home.
An exclusive experience!
Bethany's Swinging Mawsam Supperclub @swingingmawsam is an intimate & exclusive dining experience hosted in Bethany's 'Kehdy-stan' heritage flat in the heart of Gemmayzeh which she shares with her siblings. It is Bethany's dining room and not a swinger's club as some have inquired :) Rather, the menu 'swings' between seasons inspired by both the region's past culinary heritage and its future potential.
Cooked by Bethany herself in her home kitchen, the produce is sourced from producers, farmers and fishermen across Lebanon and often celebrates wild foraging traditions and long-forgotten ingredients.
Bethany offers creative, modern Middle Eastern food that still tastes satiating-ly familiar. Her cooking style merges her deep research into the region's food heritage (we're talking thousands of years back so there's plenty of food for thought at this table) with her own creative and playful touch. One thing you can expect is fresh, simple, and delicious Middle Eastern home cooking with an elegant, unique and modern twist.
A unique and inspired Menu
The menu is finalised the day before the supperclub based on the best available produce she finds. However the format remains the same every time. You can expect a delicious and intriguing Middle Eastern multi-course feasting menu that includes a welcome drink before the meal, a table laden with muqabilat/mezze (about 4-5 items) for sharing, followed by 3 individually-plated courses. If you were to compare this with a western set menu, it would be a generous equivalent to an 8 course menu.
Each course is served alongside Lebanese wine suited for the menu and season. Still and sparkling water is served as well as Arabic coffee, Cafe blanc, mint or zhoorat tea at the end of the meal. We do not offer commercial soft drinks, however, we do offer traditional sharab spritzers.
In an Old Beirut Setting
Seating is limited to 10-12 guests per night. Diners are seated around Mawsam's signature long communal table (which happens to be a reclaimed door) set in a chic, candleit 1920's heritage flat, complete with an indoor swing! For private bookings, you can request a oud artist for the evening too.
Screening
As the event is in Bethany's home, we require an non-private instagram profile for the main booker and full names of those that will be joining if it's a multi-person booking.
The Service
Bethany is not able to sit at the table as she has to be in the kitchen cooking. However, she does come to welcome everyone at the table, discuss elements of the printed menu and what is to come before heading back into the kitchen with intermittent pop backs. However, she leaves you in the professional service of a trained Diffa hostess who is on hand all evening to pour and serve you.
Location
The flat is in Gemmayzeh, a trendy part of Beirut. The full address along with directions and a map will be sent to you on the day of the event. There is street parking nearby.
Dates
Dates will be announced as far in advance as possible. Dinners begin at 8pm (we will only wait till 8:15pm for everyone to arrive but must then seat everyone and kickstart the dinner, so make a concerted effort not to be late. The dinners usually end about 23:00. For date releases, join the mailing list and follow Bethany on Instagram (@bethanykehdy) for up-to-date information.
Booking Info
- Please note, quick booking is recommended as tickets have sold out within hours of announcement & are first booked first served.
- Bethany is currently doing 2-3 evenings a month, these include private bookings which can be booked further in advance.
- If you have a gathering of 10-12 friends, it is possible to book a whole supperclub as a private event, if you are interested in this please email swingingmawsam@gmail.com to discuss this with us.
Allergies / Dietary requirements
Most of the food served is vegetarian and true to Levantine tradition. Bethany can cater for other dietary requirements but these must be discussed at the time of buying the ticket and well in advance of the event.
We also have a resident cat in the house, who will not be present during the evening! We keep an extremely clean home but anyone with an allergy to cats should be aware of this.
The flat is in an old-heritage building which means there is no elevator. There are steps to take up to the flat, so please keep that in mind.
Cancelation
To keep the ticket prices as low as possible, and with these events being so small, it really is vital that all seats are filled to make it feasible and affordable to run. Thus, tickets are transferable but non-refundable. If you have bought a ticket but unfortunately can not attend you can opt to transfer them to a friend. Please give as much notice as possible and we will also try to resell your ticket! However, if it is too close to the event and we are unable to resell the ticket you will unfortunately be charged for the ticket.
