“LOST IN THE MAPS OF SOUND”- Beirut: Jewelery Design Workshop by Estela Saez for “The design Studio by Azza Fahmy”. This course is directed to active creators and of the fields of crafts and design.

The starting point of this workshop is the city and its visual culture. Our background plays an important role in the moment we transfer our concerns into creations.. Jewelry has become today a discipline whereon concept developing, material research is taking a strong position in order to be able to design or perform pieces. In this way Jewelry can be considered in the same level of art other art discipline such as sculpture, painting and so. Without having knowledge of Jewelry techniques, we will be able to deep into its creative process, making models and several interdisciplinary exercises that can be used both in Jewelry design and other disciplines.

“Lost in the maps of sound” is the metaphorical title of the Jewelry workshop, which will conduct us to a new state. Through several practical exercises and drawing, we will achieve an evolutionary process to help us in the future to continue our individual creative process. We will combine cross-disciplinary thinking and hands-on assignments aiming to embrace a critical discourse towards making and providing a basic knowledge on metal work. Cutting, hammering, textures will be some of the techniques that will be taught.

Space, material and the city & its culture, will be taken as a starting point, attempting to sneak, explore and therefore perceive new atmospheres and new outlooks.

This course intends to stretch our mind, take advantage of the essential potential lying in-group thinking and facilitate the ground for fresh possibilities of practical experimentation.

Objectives:

Break the pre-established personal barriers between object and individual while working. Praise the creativity while making practical exercises, and search the balance between imagination and reasoning. Exploit spontaneity without preconceived reasons.

Methodology:

Transforming materials and objects in order to investigate the true essence of its qualities. The workshop is based in the evolution process, where the proposed exercises during the different sessions are inter-related. Work grouped and individually to be able to discuss about different perspectives within the process. Fast practical exercises to open the gate between the reason and unconsciousness. Empower imagination that it will be used as a tool to guarantee the creation of something really unique and personal.

Content:

Day 1: Introduction of the seminar -introduction of the participants -practical exercises -analysis -drawing

Day 2 -practical exercises–analysis

Day 3 -power point presentation “all about jewellery”analysis -drawing -practical exercises

Day 4 -practical exercises –drawing-basic introduction to metal work

Day 5- practical exercises -closure of the workshop

Please note that exercises might differ of schedule depending on the group dynamics.

Closure: For the success of the workshop and to accomplish its objectives, it is of utmost importance that participants are

willing to challenge themselves by an open predisposition towards making and sincere self-critic.
