"Mother tongue" workshop with Pierre Geagea
About the instructor:
Pierre Geagea is a Lebanese Deaf contemporary dancer, choreographer, actor, theatre director, and performance artist whose career spans more than two decades. His practice brings together contemporary dance, sign language, physical theatre, and visual storytelling to explore identity, expression, and human connection.
Born Deaf in Lebanon, Pierre discovered movement as a powerful form of communication. Dance became a means of expressing emotion and experience beyond spoken language, shaping a distinctive artistic voice grounded in visual expression and Deaf culture.
His training includes classical ballet, jazz, hip-hop, Arabic folklore, contemporary dance, and ballroom dance. He has performed across Lebanon and internationally, including in the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Croatia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. Selected appearances include the Al Hotel Bustan International Festival, the International Deaf Arts Festival in London, Expo 2020 Dubai, and a solo contemporary dance performance on Arabs Got Talent in 2017.
His creative repertoire includes Mother Tongue, EntreChaine, and The Yellow Paper, alongside collaborations integrating music, poetry, sign language, and movement. As a dance educator, he has taught children, adults, Deaf students, and people with disabilities, with an emphasis on creative confidence and inclusive access to the arts.
Pierre founded The Five Senses Theatre in 2019 and serves as its artistic director. The Deaf-led initiative brings Deaf and hearing artists together through theatre, mime, dance, and signed expression. His current creation, Where Do We Go?, explores belonging, friendship, identity, and communication through an interdisciplinary ensemble performance. Through performance, education, and artistic leadership, Pierre champions the visibility of Deaf artists and a performing arts landscape in which visual language and movement are recognized as vital forms of cultural expression.
