Illustrating and Storytelling Nostalgia in the Arab World - Beirut Design Week | PANEL
Curated by BDW xNINE, this panel will explore personal experiences with nostalgia in two Arab artists' hometowns and how they have leveraged the powers of Design and Art to convey their stories.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Jana Traboulsi: is a visual artist, graphic designer and illustrator. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the American University of Beirut, and an MA in Media and Communication Studies from Goldsmiths College, London. She is the co-founder and art director of Bidayat pan-Arab quarterly, and the art director of Snoubar Bayrout publishing house. In 2014, she co-founded the art collective Sigil. Sigil's work has been exhibited in Venice, Milan, Marrakesh, and Beirut. Since 2004, she teaches design and illustration studios and lectures in history and theory in Lebanon and abroad. Her work explores methods of visual research and the relation of text-image at the service of critical commentary, often bridging the personal and the socio-political.
Sofiane Si Merabet: is a real cultural cartographer. Travel-obsessed and a polyglot, Sofiane has always been involved in projects reflecting on Plural identities and Nostalgia. On TheConfusedArab, a digital platform, Sofiane explores the ""future of nostalgia"" concept. TheConfusedArab was part of Dubai Sikka Art Fair 2017 with the “Hammam Tomorrow’ installation which was also shown in P21 Gallery in London. In 2018, Sofiane continued his creative work on multiple identities, nostalgia, and art through the ""Hawa City"" installation, exhibited in Hafez Gallery in Jeddah. This French-Algerian built his career by leading Marketing for L'Oreal and LVMH between Paris and Dubai and is now heading Karta, a consultancy agency specialized in using and leveraging heritage and culture to create business opportunities for clients such as Cartier, Gucci, Tiffany & Co. and Coty.
