Wadi Qadisha Hike with Lebanese Wanderers

Wadi Qadisha Hike with Lebanese Wanderers
Wadi Qadisha, Lebanon’s holy valley is a must see UNESCO world heritage site. The valley holds very rich natural, cultural and religious heritage. It was inhabited by christian monks during the Ottoman rule. They lived in caves and carved beautiful monasteries out of stone, the valley became the center of the patriarchy for 300 years. Today, a small community of villagers still lives the simple life in the valley alongside the monks and hermits. The valley is truly a mesmerizing place to discover.
On Sunday may 20th we’re wandering in the wadi.
Our day will start with a simple breakfast in the bus. Man’oushe and haram juice from a small family owned bakery in jounieh
The hike will start from Al Dimane reaching Hawka, crossing the valley from side to side.
The trail begins with a steep downhill reaching a small house where we’ll have our first break.
The owners of the house will have some refreshments prepared for us.
We will then cross the river on the old Roman bridge and reach Qannoubine monastery.
Our Lady of Qannoubine was the center of the patriarchy and holds great historic and religious importance.
We continue our trail to reach Hawka monastery. If we’re lucky, we might get the chance to meet Father Dario Escobar, the famous Colombian hermit.
A couple of steps (maybe a bit more...around 700) uphill and we will reach Hawka Village, our final destination.
To end our day, we will have a late lunch at a small family owned restaurant in the village. Lunch will be home style mezza with kebbe nayye and oriental rice with chicken or meat as main course.
The trip is full of nature, culture, religion and adventure!
