EVENT OVERVIEW
Emerging from their concern to promote the business of design and to fill in the gaps between education and the industry, the Lebanese Graphic Design Syndicate is launching a new series of workshops that will happen annually. Judging by the poor quality layouts that are encoutered in our visual surroundings a technical oriented workshop dedicated to typography and layout design was demeed necessary to kick start the workshops.
Since its existence typographic and Layout Design as such has undergone many changes in order to adapt to new up coming challenges. One of the recent challenges is the introduction of the computerized typesetting system that allowed faster design and faster production. Specialized software has modernized the old method of doing layout and made it more accessible and easy to use for everyone. Yet, and because of the democratization of this process, we are being bombarded everyday with thousand of pieces of literature, which are becoming less appealing and more difficult to read, failing typographic knowledge and know how of grids systems.
AUDIENCE
Being aimed at the understanding of typography, grids and conversions, with all related technical rules and regulations, anybody, from desktop publishers, to graphic design students, to people who are involved with type forms in any way or shape, can atend this workshop and benefit from its information.
EVENT THEME AND STRUCTURE
The event is divided into two parts:
PART 1
a mini symposium on what to do and what to avoid when creating typefaces and using them in page layout also covering the mix and matching of graphic elements.
PART 2
the workshop, which is a practical application through a hands on project on how to draw typefaces, combining Latin and Arabic fonts and experimental page layout following grid systems.

Lecture 1 delivered by David Wadmore (including Q & R)
Exploring Layout
Making designs work through the use of grids, typography, pictures and imagination
"I will look at the history of grids and some practical uses of them. Also I will cover how to design page layouts for newspapers and magazines and how to understand the requirements of a design brief.
I will co-ordinate the actual brief for the participants with Mourad in the coming week or so. The requirements in the earlier emails are most helpful."

How to design an Arabic typeface to work with a Latin one.

Closing remarks
Workshop leaders will address and communicate the requested content in any form that they see fit. All topics will be covering both digital and printed type. The workshop has been structured to accommodate students with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds with a mixed level of academic and skill competency.
LANGUAGE
All workshops will be conducted in English.
VENUE
Both the workshops and mini symposium will take place in Annahar Building - Martyrs Square - Informational International Conference Room - 4th fl, conference room in down town Beirut. Working spaces will be provided and participants will have photocopier and wireless internet.
CERTIFICATE
Workshop attendants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the workshop.
